Controversy:
Aamir Khan while promoting his film in Gujarat made some comments regarding the Gujarat chief ministers handling of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the rehabilitation of displaced villagers. These comments back fired with threats from the youth wing of the BJP (state governing party) to burn down any multiplex that screens the film. Since then several multiplex had stated they cannot provide security to customers. And while these threats exist, most theatre owners in Gujarat have refused to screen the movie. But as the movie neared it release, multiplexes across the country has agreed to screen the movie. And Fanaa finally comes to multiplexes with unprecedented advance booking.

UNCERTAINTY still looms large over the screening of Fanaa in the city, though there seems some hope amidst the controversy.

Stating that the Fanaa issue is a closed one, Ashok Purohit, owner of the City Pulse multiplex, said that the ban would incur huge losses to those in the film trade, including the State Government, if it continued. He apprehends major loss, as the Multiplex Association is keen on the ban till Aamir apologises.

"One third of the share of the profits goes to distributors and the rest to the Government and exhibitors. If the ban continues, exhibitors and the Government will incur losses close to Rs 8 crore," said Purohit.

Questioning the ban, he said: "Aamir Khan has already clarified his stand on the issue by saying that he is not against Narmada or Gujarat, then why is the issue being dragged on?" A compromise between Aamir and the Multiplex Association is also on the table. Manubhai Patel, president, Multiplex Association, claimed: "Talks are on with Aamir Khan to end the issue as soon as possible. Khan is conscious of the fact that if he apologises, political parties will use the apology to tarnish his image."

Patel pointed out that the issue will hopefully be resolved within two-three days and then it will be business as usual. However, all multiplexes in the city do not feel the same and are still sticking to their decision of extending the ban.

Criticizing Purohit's views, N Ahuja, general manager, Wide Angle, said: "The decision whether to screen the movie or not can only be made by the association and not by a single member. We will not screen the movie until Aamir apologises to the people of Gujarat." Himanshu Bhagat, senior manager, Fun Republic, is also unsure as to when the movie will be screened.

Car dealers boycott Aamir

AFTER cinemas and multiplexes across Gujarat decided not to screen Aamir Khan starrer Fanaa, Toyota cars dealers said they have decided to pull back print advertisements and campaigns featuring the star in the state. Advertising agencies handling the campaigning for the two dealers in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, have decided to discontinue using print advertisements, posters and hoardings of the star, an agent handling the advertisement campaign said.
